Ripe rice

This time of year is rice harvest time in Asia and the rice terraces and paddies are turning a golden yellow. In the rural areas that I've visited the rice harvest, and rice drying is done by hand, with the drying rice kernels sometimes are even spread out right on the road. This is a close up of the ripe rice grain in their husks hanging from the plants taken in the Ta Van valley, Sa Pa, north Vietnam (best larger).

You might be interested in my comments about rice harvesting on my post for today.

Thank you for sharing the close up of the rice plants where we can see the kernels. I've often wondered what they looked like prior to the harvest.

Fascinating shot of the rice grains, nice details. I've never seen this close up.

James, I also noticed in Indonesia recently that the rice harvests on flat lands with bigger planted areas was done by what they called 'Chinese water buffalos' which were the small machines from Japan. This is entirely impractical on the small steep field of the rice terraces, where traditional hand harvesting still occurs.

    Beautiful details of the rice.
Thank you for the comment on my "Harvest Time" photo. I think the guy in that photo was just cutting a sample of the rice. Most harvesting in Japan is done with mini combine harvesters. I'll have to get some photos of them in action.

I'm glad to see this close-up. I'm not sure I'd recognize rice growing in a field.
