The Look

All the villagers were watching a welcoming ceremony for us when we arrive at Krui in West Lampung Province, Sumatra. As I watched the crowd, this girl turned around and looked directly at me. I processed the photo with selective colour so she stood out from the others, since she stood out from the crowd when she turned and gave me The Look.
• The rarely seen Gending Sriwijaya dance

Gending Sriwijaya is the official music of South Sumatra that celebrates the grandeur of its ancient past. Sriwijaya was a Buddhist kingdom in South Sumatra and the earliest historical record of its existence dates back to the 7th century. The Gending Sriwijaya song was written during the Japanese occupation of Sumatra and, after a period of being banned under President Soeharto, it is now used to accompany a welcoming dance (tari tanggai) for visiting dignitaries.

According to protocol, 5 dancers are used for welcoming regional heads, 7 dancers for provincial governors, and 9 dancers for heads of state, including the President of Indonesia. As seen in the accompanying post http://goo.gl/XDCNeX), we had 7 dancers, and the formal betel nut box accompanying the dancers, each of whom had the traditional the long golden finger nails attached to each finger.
• Traditional welcome ceremony 'Gending Sriwijaya', Liwa, West Lampung, Sumatra

The lead dancer of seven dancers is carrying the traditional betel nut box (tepak), and all the dancers are wearing long golden finger nails and beautiful songkets. Songkets are woven silk cloths with inlaid gold and silver threads. Songket weaving is done in two stages. First the basic cloth is woven and then the gold and silver decorations are inserted into the basic cloth, called "inlay weaving". South Sumatra is one of the famous songket production centers and antique songkets, made from real gold thread, can sell for thousands of dollars.
