One of the best things about travelling to remote areas that rarely see foreigners is the genuine, spontaneous delight of the children when they see you coming. This photo captures the moment.
• National Women's Day

Master of ceremonies at a celebration at the house of Sukarno, the first President of Indonesia. Since Sukarno's time and his successor Suharto, women have made some progress in Indonesia, but still have a long way to go before they reach the status level that women have achieved in North American and Europe.

In Bengkulu, at the house of Indonesia's first president, Sukarno, they put on a show for us that seemed to be part fashion show and part beauty contest....I really didn't understand what was going on, but the young people in their traditional dress were gorgeous to photograph

Several of them are featured here: http://goo.gl/MZjHQT
• Gotta love markets!

Young girl selling food at the market, Bengkulu, Southwest Sumatra. Can anyone identify this indigenous leaf-wrapped food? The nearest I could come was some kind of lemper, e.g., lemper ayam (glutinous rice with chicken breast strips wrapped in a banana leaf), except it doesn't look like chicken embedded in the rice.

This was a covered indoor market and quite dark, necessitating the use of flash fill. Other photos from the market can be seen here: http://goo.gl/sEfZUu
fantastic shot. they might not see foreigners very often, but their clothing speaks to plenty of contact with 'the outside world'.
