In this case the basket of charcoal is lifted off the ground by a couple of helpers. A weight is suspended from a loop on the weighing beam and the hanging weigh is moved closer or further away from the pivot point until the beam is parallel to ground level. The weight can then be read at a marking where the weight is hanging, or can be calculated by a simple formula if you know the weight of the movable weight and the distance between it and the pivot point when the beam is level.
