When I looked at my photos from Rongjiang Market in Guizhou Province, China, I realized that behind the smiling woman selling oranges, there was an entire butchered pig from the head in the bucket to the liver and lungs hanging on the pole, and everything in between.
• Woman selling baskets of charcoal, Rongjiang Market, Guizhou Province, China

In the rural areas of southern China, much of the cooking and heating is still done with charcoal, and this smiling woman was doing a booming business.
  • Weighing a basket of charcoal the low tech way

Traditional Chinese static equilibrium torque scale at the Rongjiang market, Guizhou Province, China. In this case the basket of charcoal is lifted off the ground by a couple of helpers. A weight is suspended from a loop on the weighing beam and the hanging weigh is moved closer or further away from the pivot point until the beam is parallel to ground level. The weight can then be read at a marking where the weight is hanging, or can be calculated by a simple formula if you know the weight of the movable weight and the distance between it and the pivot point when the beam is level. I saw several different torque scales being used at the market.

This is an example of in camera selective colour, since most of the scene was naturally black and grey with a spot of colour only in the center of the shot, drawing the eye.

More shots from the market, including another torque scale, can be seen here: http://goo.gl/rScCs7

In this market, pork was the main meat being sold. I didn't see any chickens or other source of protein except for live fish.

And to imagine that eating Carp in America just is t a custom. When I was a kid we called them trash fish. Thanks for your comment on my pots of the young girl. Since I wasn't her "official" photographer, I couldn't ask her to re-position herself in better light, but I sure wanted to. :-).
