Masked performer
Liuguan Han Village in Guizhou Province contains a remnant population of Han people (called Old Han) who migrated to the area early in the Ming Dynasty (AD 1382) during a military invasion to suppress the local tribes. They still perform one of the oldest operas of the world that is still surviving, called the Ground Opera. The opera is famed for the performers' symbolic masks, one of which is seen here.

on January 10, 2016What a remarkable heritage of performance art. It makes me wonder how close the current masks are to the ones used in the 14th century.
