• Wheel barrow in the air

This construction worker was loading tiles into the wheel barrow suspended from a pulley in a Dong village in Guizhou Province, China. Best larger to see the touches of sunset on his face.
 • The old woman

I was invited by an old man to enter his house where this old woman sat warming herself by a charcoal fire, lit with the light from a small window.
 • The welder

I was walking down the street near the market in Rongjiang town and saw this welder lit bythe light coming from his welding torch.
 • The weaver

In a small ethnic Miao village I was invited into a home and taken down the stairs into a dark smoky basement room where a woman was weaving by the light coming through a dirty window. Biasha Miao ethnic village, Guizhou Province, China

Photographing people indoors in China was a challenge because often there was no light but that which came from a small window. I didn't want to use flash light since it can give an artificial look to the photos, so started experimenting with 'Rembrandt' style lighting using ambient light from the natural sources. This resulted in a more dramatic lighting than could be achieved using on-camera flash.

Other photos where I experiment with lighting can be seen here: http://goo.gl/Z8W6nW
• Portrait of a Dong woman in traditional attire playing a pipa.

Zhaoxing Dong village, Guizhou Province, China. This woman is playing a Dong pipa, a four or 5 string plucked instrument. Her hairstyle is a typical Dong style consisting of a topnot worn high on the head.

Note: the background is painted on a wall behind her; I desaturated it a little to not be too distracting. You can see the BG better in one or two of the photos accessed from the link below. The jewelry is silver, so probably a bit heavy (but not as heavy as gold).

The south of China has a number of Chinese minority ethnic groups living in Guizhou and Yunnan provinces. The Dong are one of the 56 minority groups recognized by the People's Republic of China. They are skilled carpenters, building unique stilt houses and other wooden structures like drum towers and wind and rain bridges.

A photo and explanation of their unique stilt house buildings, plus other interesting info about the Dong, can be seen here: http://goo.gl/Gr5b3g
• Dong houses with reflections, Zhaoxing Dong village, Guizhou Province, China

Dong villages are preferentially build on rivers on wooden pillars. They generally have three floors, a bottom one for poultry and livestock, the middle one for the family, and the top one for storing grains and other foods. The top floor is open to the air (under a tile roof), for better ventilation to keep the food dry.

The Dong are renowned for their polyphonic choir singing with is a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. A nice video of Dong culture with some of their polyphonic singing can be seen here: http://goo.gl/z5rVKS
 • Dong woman harvesting daikon radishes, Zhaoxing Dong village, Guizhou Province, China

Daikon adishes appear to be a staple crop for the Dong as many of the houses had long poles on their balconies with radishes draped over them drying. They likely use them for making dongchimi a kind of radish soup.
This girl was pretty serious, but soon after I took this photo she was joined by an equally serious young friend and it didn't take long before they were both hamming it up for the camera.

Please see here for this girl and her young friend living it up with their gap-toothed smiles, and a charming pic of a young girl in pink: http://goo.gl/LPDpjH
