Tiger in the extreme cold
Siberian tiger in the extreme cold
When I went out yesterday to photograph the tigers the temperature was around -33C to -25C. I was dressed in heavy Canada Goose down expedition parka and pants with -50 boots, etc. so was warm and comfortable, but my D800 was freezing and starting to malfunction after a couple of hours in the frigid temperatures, and the view through the view finder was completely blurred (it has since recovered...the problem was likely caused by static electricity in the extreme cold). So I switched to my D7100 and got this shot of the tiger with its breath condensing in the frigid air.

on May 9, 2016Extraordinary cold and an extraordinary cat to match it. Amazing to think that the Siberian Tiger can withstand temperatures down to -50 C in winter, and in summer, up and over 30 C. That is a temperature range of over 80 C. Unbelievable !!! What a fantastic shot, with the air condensation and iced whiskers ! A classic !!!

on April 21, 2016Totally incredible shot Terry! I love the steamy breath, this is one of your best. I can hardly imagine that kind of cold. Is this another of your "finds" on the D7100? If so, this is amazing!

on April 20, 2016Wonderful shot, and eye-opening to realize that animals have adapted to quite comfortable in those conditions.
