Juvenile scarlet ibis

Until they are around 2 years old scarlet ibis (Eudocimus ruber) are more gray in colour, gradually turning bright red from the pigments from crustaceans in their diet. This juvenile was showing off its beautiful plumage.

I may not be able comment and post very regularly for the next while, but will be back again hopefully with some interesting new images.

There is a world class bird park, Parque Das Aves, just outside the entry gates to Foz do Iguacu waterfalls. Early in the morning the flamingos (Phoenicopterus chilensis) seemed to be sleeping with their heads tucked back under their wings...but not quite asleep, as this juvenile's open eye shows.
The toco toucan (common toucan) is the largest member of the toucan family with a bill up to 23 cm (9 in) long. The bill is not as heavy as it looks, as it is largely hollow inside. It is used to pick and peel fruit and other food, and to reach things that might otherwise be out of reach. It can also be used to scare off predators.
Terry, regarding your question on my tree bark post of 11.20.15, I think it's pine...

Super catch and info! I never knew their vibrant color was a result of their diet!

Thanks for the info. This bird is probably waiting for the color of his mother

What an interesting and apparent contrast in the colors of the Juvenile scarlet ibis and the Scarlet ibis that you posted yesterday. Thanks for sharing the information explaining why!
