• Male American pygmy kingfisher (Chloroceryle aenea), Pixaim River, Pantanal, Brazil

These are tiny birds and quite hard to see, so I was lucky to get a shot.

Other bird photos, including the fascinating Great potoo, and an ocelot can be seen here: http://goo.gl/ZCL6Ct
• Great potoo (Nyctibius grandis) and chick in a tree

These are fascinating nocturnal birds related to the frogmouths and nightjars. During the day they are in “stump look alike mode”.They find a branch that perfectly merges with their cryptic plumage where they remain dead-still, even when closely approached. Potoos have developed unique slits in their eyelids in order to detect motion without having to open their large eyes, which would ruin their disguise. This shot is unusual since it also includes a chick.
 • Ringed kingfisher (Megaceryl toruata) in a tree
 • Jabiru stork (Jabiru mycteria) drinking from the river in the evening.

There were nice reflections in the water.
 • Ringed kingfisher (Megaceryl toruata) with a large fish in its beak.
 • Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) at night near the Pixaim river.

The nocturnal cats are hard to photograph since they mostly come out after dark to hunt. This photo was taken with on camera flash.
 • Gotcha!
