Willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) are members of the grouse family and another northern species, like the arctic fox, that turn white in winter. In this image a flock of ptarmigan were photographed in the willow bushes that are their native habitat.
Wonderful view of these Willow Ptarmigan. This species is the "first bird" on my life list. When I was 4 years old I saw a group like this beside the road in Alaska (I lived there) and pointed out the window and said "ptarmigans"! That's the first independent ID of a bird that I recall, so it's on my life list. Of course I had had them pointed out to be before by my parents, but that ID was all mine. I'm now 75 years old, and haven't seen any since. Sigh....Thanks for the memory.
