Ladakh women with kitten
This young grey kitten had spotted markings somewhat like a snow leopard. It was a lively, friendly resident with the herder family where I stayed for a week in the small village of Ullay northwest of Leh in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, India. The village was accessed by a one lane gravel road and had a total of seven houses. The views down the valley from the 4000 m village were magnificent. They had small herds of cattle, sheep, yaks and mixed cattle/yak (dzo). The village had electricity and a back-up generator for the frequent winter outages. There was one telephone for the entire village, no internet, and in winter no running water from the frozen stream. The village was my base for searching for snow leopards, wolves, blue sheep, ibex, argali, uriel and other wildlife.
