Women dancer using codified hand and eye positions in Barong Calon Arang traditonal dance, Sahadewa Barong Dance Company, Ubud, Bali. Balinese traditional dance has an ancient history and is a UNESCO Intangible cultural heritage. Balinese dancers express the stories of dance-drama through the bodily gestures including gestures of fingers, hands, head and eyes. The positions of the eyes, hands, feet and body each have complex meanings and must be performed precisely. They are studied starting in childhood.
