Giant river otter with a sashimi breakfast
It is great fun to watch the families of river otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) fishing and playing on the banks of the river. The otters are up to around 5.6 feet long and, although very playful, can also be quite nasty as their nickname 'river wolf' implies. They were almost exterminated throughout their range for their fur, but are starting to make a come-back after the fur trade was made illegal. The plants in the background are water hyacinths, an important part of the river ecosystems where many fish eaten by the otters eat live and breed. River otters are not easy to photograph as they are very fast and active, popping up out of the water at random and swimming rapidly. I was able to get a photo of this one as it backed up against some water hyacinths to eat a fish....this behaviour deters other otters from stealing their fish.
